2018 Hurricane Predictions

Did you know that the 2018 hurricane season has been predicted to be an above average season? Many experts are expecting to see a season similar to 2017, which was also above average, with three major hurricanes making landfall in the US alone. In fact, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted the possibility of 10 to 16 names storms (windspeeds of 39 mph or higher), 5 to 9 hurricanes (windspeeds of 74 mpg or higher), and 1 to 4 major hurricanes (windspeeds of 111mph or higher). There are two main factors contributing to the elevated activity predicted for this year’s hurricane season.

  1. The high possibility of a weak El Niño
  2. Near-average sea surface temperatures of both the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea

The NOAA is always looking for new tools to increase accuracy and to also communicate with the public regarding any predictions, storm warnings, ect. Some of these tools include new and updated satellites. Are you ready for the 2018 Hurricane Season?
