What Every Homeowner Should Know About Hurricanes

You’ve certainly heard a lot about hurricanes and hurricane shutters in Vero Beach recently, and you may have some questions about them. Here are some possible explanations for what’s going on and why.

In the 16th century, Spanish explorers picked up the name from the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean. The name of their storm god, Juracán, inspired the Spanish word huracán. In English, it was changed to hurricane.

Hurricanes: What You Need to Know

When a Hurricane Threatens, Do I Need to Open My Windows?

A loud no is the answer. When a hurricane approaches, it is a common misconception that opening windows would help equalize pressure in your home. Plywood or shutters should be used to board up any windows.

Leaving your windows open will only bring a lot of rain into your home, as well as the possibility of flying debris.

What Does a Typical Hurricane Season Entail?

On average, there are 10.6 tropical storms in a hurricane season. Six of them develop into hurricanes, with two of them developing into significant hurricanes (category three or above). The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June to November; however, hurricanes can occur at any point throughout that time.

Why Do Hurricanes Have Names?

A tropical cyclone is given a name when it becomes a tropical storm. It’s much easier to remember the name of a storm than try to track it by using latitude and longitude. It also helps prevent confusion when there is more than one tropical storm or hurricane occurring at the same time.

Except for the letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z, the names are in alphabetical sequence. The list now includes names from the English, Spanish, and French languages.
